What can trigger a migraine?

Many people who have never had a migraine think that it is just a headache, but it is much worse. It can be debilitating, bringing nausea and vomiting, severe pain, extreme sensitivity to light and sound and many other symptoms. Someone who is experiencing a migraine may not even be able to get out of bed, much less go to work.

But how does a migraine start, and what could trigger it? There are genetic factors to consider, and even medical professionals do not know everything about why migraines happen. However, they have identified some potential triggers to keep in mind.

Outside stimuli

To begin with, many different types of stimuli can cause a migraine. For instance, strong smells or bright, flashing lights can trigger one to come on.

Food and drink

In some cases, the things that people eat and drink may trigger a migraine. Both caffeine and alcohol, especially when used in excess, can cause a migraine. Certain foods, such as processed foods or those with significant additives, may also contribute.

External stress

For many people, migraines happen because they are feeling stressed. A worker could be stressed about deadlines at the office, or a college student could be stressed about upcoming exams. Someone who is going through a divorce could also be experiencing high levels of consistent stress.

Seeking potential benefits

Many of these triggers are outside of your control, so it can be difficult to find relief from migraines. If you experience them on a consistent basis and they affect your ability to work, it is important to understand what rights you may have to seek SSDI benefits.
